The Chaos of Home

Coming home has actually been much easier than when we had Graham. I think primarily because we know we can survive on little sleep (or at least I can survive on little sleep - Kyle is now sleeping in the guest room on the third floor with the dogs while I take care of Brooks throughout the night), we are more relaxed than we were with the shock of a first child, and Brooks has been a great baby.

But - coming home wasn't completely smooth. Brooks lost a good bit of weight from birth to first doctor's appt - he started out at 8 pounds 2 ounces and was 7 pounds 5 ounces two days after birth. And quite yellow. So, we had additional appointments this week to monitor him. He is now doing great and was back to his birth weight within 6 days!!! (and no more jaundice)

But - the real chaos -

Brooks was born on January 1st. We came home on January 2. January 4th was the day. Kona had another surgery (She recently had surgery to remove a tooth that had been partially yanked out at the root. Well, in a recent game of tug-of-war with Molly, the same thing happened to the other side of her mouth. Her mouth and cheek muscles are now stronger than her little old lady teeth. No more tug-of-war.) Kyle dropped her off in the morning and picked her up in the evening. Around 11am, we noticed the lights in our downstairs start to flicker. After Kyle did some trouble shooting we determined it was a problem with Dominion Virginia Power. Luckily they came right out. And, indeed, one of the two lines that keeps electricity flowing into our home had gone bad. They did a temporary fix. Within about 20 minutes every bit of electricity into our house had gone. No lights, no heat, no opening the fridge. Both lines that connect our home to Dominion Virginia Power were dead. And to top it all off, I was feeling very uncomfortable - all delivery-related "stuff". We ultimately did get power back at 8pm that night. But what an emotional day. We ended up going to my parents' house because our house got too cold. And, my sweet Kona Brown was uncomfortable from surgery on top of that. I felt a little like we were living on the frontier for a bit. But we are now back and functioning, I am starting to feel better, and Kona is definitely on the mend. She is almost done with her meds. Other good news - since it wasn't our problem, it didn't cost us a thing.
